What E48 Means

E48 reports an open winding in the drive motor - an electrical break inside the motor itself. This belongs to the E-code set on GE front-load washers (the GFW-style machines); the same code string means something different on GE top-load machines and on the older GE Profile front-load platform. Unlike a jammed drum or a hot inverter, this one names the motor as the failed part, so the drum will not be driven at all.

Common Causes of E48

  • Open winding inside the drive motor
  • Damaged motor connector or harness reading as an open circuit
  • Water ingress into the motor connections
  • Inverter fault misreporting the motor

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

One power reset is reasonable: unplug the washer or switch its breaker off for a minute, restore power and run a short cycle. Beyond that there is nothing to adjust. If the code returns, the motor needs testing and almost certainly replacing, and it is worth asking for the cost of parts and labour against the machine's age before committing.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Motor testing needs resistance measurements at the motor connector with the machine isolated, and the motor sits low in the cabinet behind the drum.
  • A damaged harness gives the same code as a failed motor - replacing the motor without checking the harness can waste the part.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

E48 FAQ

It does. With an open winding the motor cannot drive the drum, so cycles stall early.

On a newer machine usually yes; on an older one the quote may approach replacement cost. Get the diagnosis first.
