Code 1 on the GTW top-load chart means the control detected the basket spinning while the lid was not locked. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. This is a safety-related fault: the interlock exists so nothing can reach a spinning basket, and the control stops the machine when the two do not agree.
