Wet dishes generate a lot of service calls that end without a repair, because the way dishwashers dry changed. Older machines ran an exposed heating element at the bottom and baked the load dry, using a lot of energy. Many current designs rely on condensation drying, sometimes with a fan or a supplementary heater, which is far more efficient and much less forgiving of a badly loaded rack.
Things That Are Working as Designed
- Plastics stay wet. Plastic does not retain heat, so water does not evaporate off it the way it does off glass and china. This is normal on nearly every current dishwasher.
- Items hold pooled water. Anything with a concave base, mug bottoms and upturned bowls, collects water that has nowhere to run.
- Opening the door immediately. Condensation drying continues after the cycle ends. Letting the machine stand closed for twenty minutes changes the result noticeably.
- An eco or light cycle. Lower-energy cycles dry less. If drying matters for a load, choose a heavier cycle or the drying enhancement your model offers.
The Two Fixes That Actually Help Most
First, use rinse aid, and keep the dispenser filled. It lowers water surface tension so drops sheet off instead of clinging, and on condensation-drying machines it is not optional if you want dry dishes. Second, load with drying in mind: tilt bowls and mugs, avoid nesting items, keep plastics on the top rack, and do not pack the load so tightly that air cannot circulate.
What Counts as a Real Fault
- A sudden change: the same loads and same cycle used to come out dry and now do not.
- Dishes that come out cool at the end of a heated cycle, which can indicate a heater or control problem.
- An error code or a cycle that ends far sooner than it used to.
- A vent flap that no longer opens on models that have one.
- Standing water in the tub at the end, which is a drain problem rather than a drying problem.
If it is a genuine change rather than a long-standing annoyance, book GE dishwasher repair. Mention whether the interior feels warm when the cycle finishes; it separates a heating fault from a loading habit before anyone opens the door panel.
